How to Help Your Child Improve Their Oral Reading Skills

Reading involves much more than just being able to recognize the words on a page. In fact, this skill is actually a set of skills that all work together to make sense of what is on a page. One of the skills your child must master in order to be an effective reader is oral reading. To help them master this, use these simple tips.

Introduce Your Child to Reading Early On

Introducing your child to reading concepts early on is a great way to ensure they are able to master these. When your child is still very young, read to them so that they feel much more comfortable with reading themselves. Once they start to recognize letters and sounds, have them read to you. Even if they're just letter sounds, this can help them develop basic reading skills and the confidence to continue moving forward.

Correct Reading Mistakes

We all make mistakes while reading, the key is to correct them when they happen. If your child is struggling to pronounce a word as they read to you, stop and have them sound it out. Once they have it figured out, have them repeat the word and then reread the whole sentence. This isn't meant to embarrass them, but rather help their reading comprehension skills as well.

Create a Reading Nook at Home

Having a comfortable place where your child to read at home is key to helping them develop a healthy reading habit. Look for a space where they will be free of distractions and where they can escape for a bit. Join them and do some reading out loud so you can keep track of their skills.
