Tips to Help Your Child Stay Organized

If your child could use some help getting organized, use these tips to help them on their way.

Get Rid of Clutter

Generally, a messy space will lead to a messy brain. Help your child avoid getting lost in the clutter by maintaining their supplies organized and clutter-free. Start by setting up a weekly day on which you can both work on decluttering their school supplies as well as their work area. Help them decide what papers to keep in their backpack, what to throw out, and what should be stored. The same can be done for their notebooks and binders. Have them clean their work area at home and get rid of items that can turn into distractions. You may not be able to check their workspace at school or their locker, but be sure to remind them to keep these areas decluttered as well.

Create To-Do Lists

Creating daily and weekly to-do lists that include homework assignments, upcoming tests to study for, and extracurricular commitments can help your child plan ahead. This can help your child stay on track and can even help them learn to measure their time better. Not only will they be better organized, but it's also almost certain they won't miss a task because they simply forgot.

Use Organization Tools

Organization tools are great because they not only help students stay on task, they can also be quite fun to use. A daily planner can help your child keep track of daily assignments, and a monthly calendar can help them keep track of upcoming events they need to prepare for. Provide your child with a whiteboard where they can write their to-do lists and cross things off as they accomplish them. Other tools your child can use include post-it notes, highlighters, and colored pens for their notes and assignments.
