Important School Routines to Establish

If your child has a hard time keeping up during the school year, a bit of structure may help. Although they may struggle to adapt to a routine, they'll adjust and be on their way to a more successful school year. Use these tips to start developing some new routines.

Create a Bedtime Routine

A bedtime routine may not sound all that important but it can make a huge difference in your child's day to day life. By having a set bedtime and a routine that helps your child fall asleep on time each night, you can be sure they'll get the right amount of sleep. This means they'll have an easier time getting up and staying focused through the day. Your child's routine should start at least an hour before their bedtime. During this hour they should perform tasks that will help them relax so that they have a much easier time falling asleep. They can read for a bit, take a warm bath, or listen to relaxing music. Have them avoid their smartphone, tablet, laptop and any other blue light screen since these can negatively affect the amount of sleep they get and the quality of their sleep.

Develop an After School Routine

Get your child to be productive after school by developing an after school routine that caters to their needs. If your child has a hard time sitting still right after school, give them some outdoor play time before they have to do their homework. Other children may have a hard time concentrating on their work and may need a short nap or a healthy snack to recharge their batteries. Figuring this out will help them get through their homework and study time more effectively.

Get Homework Done

Now that your child is ready to be productive, set their homework time. They should do this at the same time every day so that it becomes routine without them even thinking about it. Work with them for at least the first week so that they get used to it. Have your child start off by writing a to-do list of the work they need to get done. Help them prioritize the list and check off items as they get through it.
