How to Write a Great Essay

Essay writing can be quite intimidating, especially if you haven't written many. However, with practice and the right guidance, writing an essay can be a breeze. To help your child write a great essay, check out these tips.

Understand the Topic

Before even starting to write your essay, be sure you understand the topic. Once you're sure you know what the essay is asking of you, focus your attention on answering the question and proving your answer through your supporting evidence. As you write, stop periodically to check that you're staying on topic and that your work is proving your point as solidly as possible.

Know the Structure

Another aspect you will have to understand before starting to write your essay is the structure that your paper should take on. Some essays are short and only require three paragraphs while others are longer and will require a minimum of five paragraphs. Five paragraph essays are the standard and are made up of an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Double check your assignment just to be sure you're sticking to correct structure as you write.

Do Your Research

Finally, to prove whatever you're arguing in your essay, you're going to need some facts to back you up. This means a bit of research will be needed for a stronger argument. Grab your books and take note of facts you can use in your essay to strengthen your argument. Take down quotes and be sure you know how to cite them in your writing.
